Cantine del Notaio: the soul of Aglianico del Vulture and the power of the land of volcano
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, March 23rd, 2017
For the third time, Cantine del Notaio takes part to a DiWineTaste event by unfolding the secrets of Aglianico and Vulture area, presenting six wines capable of interpreting Aglianico del Vulture in different wine making styles and giving to the famous grape from Vulture both personality and character. The narration of Aglianico and Vulture has been done by dr. Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti - owner, agronomist and wine maker of the winery in Rionero del Vulture - who, in the well known and usual competence, introduced DiWineTaste readers to the peculiarities of the territory and Aglianico. The event has also been the occasion to test - for the first time in a public event - the result of a research led by dr. Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, having the goal to understand the evolution of Aglianico's organoleptic character according to different woods used for the making of barrels. The study - done by a university research group and led by dr. Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti - has been particularly focused on the use of typical Italian wood types and, in particular, found in woods areas of Basilicata region. Participants to the event had the opportunity to taste, by using the method of comparative evaluation, three wines made with Aglianico and aged in barrels made from different wood types, in order to express their impressions and preference for each wine. The experiment, done by "blind tasting" - that is without revealing any element about wine making - allowed participants, among the other things, to understand how the aging in wood can change a wine's sensorial profile, even drastically. The evening has also had as protagonists six wines produced by Cantine del Notatio, starting from two classic method sparkling wines - La Stipula Brut Metodo Classico 2012 and La Stipula Brut Rosé Metodo Classico 2011 - produced with Aglianico, two distinct interpretations capable of proving the wine making versatility of the grape from Vulture. The event continues with the only white wine of the evening - Il Preliminare 2016, made from Aglianico vinified in white, Muscat blanc, Malvasia bianca and Chardonnay - a preview tasting reserved to this DiWineTaste event, characterized by a good balance between elegance of aromas and the contrast of crispness and roundness. It is then the turn of the two red wines of the evening - Aglianico del Vulture Il Repertorio 2014 and Aglianico del Vulture Il Sigillo 2011 - two interpretations of the same grape and clearly different. Il Repertorio is characterized by an evident crisp and immediate character, Il Sigillo, clearly more powerful and full, has a more complex roundness and texture, while keeping the typical character of Aglianico. The event ended with L'Autentica - a pearl of Italian wine making scene of sweet wines - fruit of Muscat blanc and Malvasia bianca giving a wine of impeccable balance and extraordinary elegance, richness in aromas and supported by a sensorial complexity of remerkable class. The tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana - DiWineTaste editor in chief - who has also created, as usual, the dishes paired to the wines of Cantine del Notaio.
