Romanelli: from Trebbiano Spoletino to Montefalco Rosso and Three Interpretations of Sagrantino
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, January 25th, 2018
After five years Romanelli winery of San Clemente in Montefalco is again the protagonist of a DiWineTaste event, talking about their territory and wines. A comeback having in the glasses the new wines they started making in recent years and, therefore, not part of 2012 event. In these years, in fact, Romanelli winery introduced in their vineyards Trebbiano Spoletino - the emerging white berried grape of Umbria - a Rosso di Montefalco Riserva and a Montefalco Sagrantino cru. To the event took part Devis and Costantino Romanelli, owners of the winery of San Clemente and established in 1978 also thanks to the work of Amedeo Romanelli,Costantino's father. Among the many and interesting wines, Trebbiano Spoletino Le Tese 2015, the wine which started the event dedicated to Romanelli winery. Made with 100% Trebbiano Spoletino, it provides for the maceration in skin for at least forty days, Le Tese expresses the characteristic full body of this white grape, while having a pleasing crispness well joined to roundness and elegance, also enriched by the expressions or aromas, complex and pleasing, in a continuous evolution in the glass. It is the the turn of the second wine of the evening - Montefalco Rosso 2015 - made with Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, perfectly expresses the crispness of Sangiovese and the power of Sagrantino as well as the roundness of Merlot, giving to the senses a wine of remarkable agreeableness. The third wine of the event was Rosso di Montefalco Riserva Molinetta 2012, produced with Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot grapes, having a fuller body and structure, a wine having a very good balance and in which time gives an austere and elegant character, also thanks to the contribution of the aging in wood, absolutely balance. The event continued with the first of the three Sagrantino wines of the evening, starting from the historical label of Romanelli winery, for the occasion tasted in its 2013 vintage, a wine confirming the potentials of the famous red from Montefalco as well as of the winery of San Clemente. To the glass gives the typical Sagrantino's aromas, in which blackberry is the main one, as well as the usual power of tannins, however round and ripe, making of this Sagrantino a wine of remarkable elegance. Remarkable interest and appreciation of participants has been expressed for the fifth wine of the evening, Romanelli's Sagrantino cru and which suceeded, in a short time, to get very good opinions from critics and consumers alike. Montefalco Sagrantino Medeo 2012 - dedicated to the founder Amedeo Romanelli, becoming, according to the Umbrian dialects, "Medeo" - expresses a remarkable personality, round and pleasing tannins, as well as the characteristic powerful structure of this grape, a wine expressing one of the best Romanelli winery's production for sure. The evening ended with Montefalco Sagrantino Passito 2012, the well known style and historically representing this territory, giving to the senses its unique gustatory qualities in which the intense sweetness gets a robust balance in tannins, a wine undoubtedly allowing surprising pairing with food, one of the few wines in Italy to be paired to cocoa and chocolate. The sensorial tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana - DiWineTaste chief editor - who has also created, as usual, the dishes paired to the wines of Romanelli winery.
