The wines of Marilena Barbera, tenacious and enterprising vintner of Menfi, in province of Agrigento, reflect the soul and warmth of the Sicilian sea. Her vineyards, overlooking the coasts of Mediterranean Sea, gives the wines a particular character and personality, wines having a pleasing minerality and crispness, in the glass fully express the character of wines "breathing" the sea. Marilena Barbera cultivates her vineyards and make wine with the noble will of reevaluating local grapes, among the many the viticultural heritage of Sicily. In her wines can be found Inzolia and Nero d'Avola, as well as Perricone and Nerello Mascalese, among the Sicilian red grapes of highest interest and which should certainly deserve a better appreciation. Marilena Barbera, who took part to the event, told participants her story of vintner and her vision about wine and how make wine, by unfolding five of her wines, fruit of the local grapes of her territory. The event starts with Inzolia 2012, a pleasing and direct wine, showing in the glass an evident crispness, a quality most would not expect from a wine produced under the Sicilian sun. Crispness is however a characteristic of Cantine Barbera's wines, fully confirmed in the second wine, Menfi Inzolia Dietro Le Case 2011, same grape however coming from an elder vineyard, shows a full character in which Inzolia grape expresses its qualities in a clean and complete way. It is then the turn of one of the wines which mainly distinguishes the winery of Menfi: La Bambina 2012. Produced with Nero d'Avola, La Bambina is one of the few rose wines to be produced in Sicily, "daughter" of Marilena Barbera who strongly believed in this wine and personally follows the production, from vineyard to bottle. Glasses get a red hue and it is then the turn of Microcosmo 2009, among the most interesting wines produced by Barbera Winery. Made from Perricone grape and a small quantity of Nerello Mascalese, Microcosmo certainly represents one of the most interesting wines of the winery of Menfi, rich of personality, certainly not common, a wine from which we will certainly extraordinary emotions in future vintages. The event ended with Menfi Rosso Riserva Coda della Foce 2008, produced with Nero d'Avola, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes, a wine expressing a fuller structure and body than the previous ones, in which Nero d'Avola gives a crisp Sicialian character to Merlot roundness and to Petit Verdot severity. The tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana, who also invented - as usual - the dishes paired to the wines of the event.
