Villa Mongalli: the elegance of Sagrantino di Montefalco
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, January 24th, 2013
Sagrantino, the great red grape of Umbria, a worldwide wine celebrity and absolute glory of Montefalco, is also famous for being the grape having the highest content in polyphenols. A characteristic which is always evident in its wines, of remarkable structure and power, a quality however typical in Sagrantino and in its prestige. Villa Mongalli, with the precise choice of commercializing its wines after more than five years of aging in bottle, gives an excellent interpretation, bringing to the glass a Sagrantino of great power but, at the same time, of remarkable elegance. The event dedicated to Villa Mongalli - to which took part the owners Paolo Menghini, Pierpaolo Menghini and his wife Natascia - allowed participants to understand a new aspect of Sagrantino di Montefalco, made of power associated to elegance. The evening had another great protagonist - Trebbiano Spoletino - a rising star in Umbrian wine scene, a grape capable of making white wines of good crispness and pleasing minerality. The event started with a wine made from this grape, Calicanto 2011, the only white wine of the event, vinified in steel tanks, a wine of good crispness and pleasing minerality. The event continued with the first of the four red wines, expression of the territory, Montefalco Rosso Le Grazie 2007, in which Sangiovese grape plays the role of the protagonist with the contribution of Sagrantino. The second red wine of the evening has been Col Cimino 2005, produced with Sagrantino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in equal parts, a wine of great personality and balance that, after seven years of aging, shows good chances of evolution. The event ended with the two Sagrantino di Montefalco wines produced by Villa Mongalli, both belonging to vintage 2004. The first one has been Sagrantino di Montefalco Pozzo del Curato 2004, a wine expressing the typical power of Sagrantino to which time gave smooth tannins and a balance of remarkable quality. The wine best appreciated by participants has been Sagrantino di Montefalco Della Cima 2004 - awarded with DiWineTaste five diamonds - a more concentrated wine, with an excellent balance as well as an excellent balance and roundness of tannins, also giving a very good agreeableness. The tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana, who has also been the author of the dishes for the pairing and realized, as usual, by Locanda dei Golosi kitchen led by Chef Emiliano Buccolini.
