Romanelli: Montefalco, Sagrantino and Passito

The Romanelli family runs since 1978 their farm in San Clemente hill near Montefalco and here, for more than thirty years, are being produced olive oil - with the cultivar San Felice, Moraiolo and Leccino - as well as wine, including the famous Sagrantino di Montefalco. The event dedicated to Romanelli has in fact had as protagonist the whole production of the winery: besides tasting the wines, all the dishes of the evening has been cooked by using Romanelli's olive oil and, finally, at the end of the event, participants has the chance to appreciate the grappa produced with Sagrantino pomace. To the event took part Mr. Costantino Romanelli and his son Devis, who told participants the history and characteristics of their winery as well as the characteristics of the wines and oils tasted in the course of the evening. The event started with Predara 2009 - the first wine ever commercialized by the winery of San Clemente - produced with Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot, aged for a short time in cask. The event continued with Montefalco Rosso 2008, an interesting red wine produced with Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in cask and barrique for 12 months. The wines which received the highest appreciation have been the two Sagrantino di Montefalco, tasted for the occasion in two distinct vintages. 2008, despite it is still aging in bottle, has a good elegance given by the better balance expressed by the vintage, whereas 2007, son of a very warm vintage, is a Sagrantino having a fuller body and power. The event ended with Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito 2008, aged in cask and barrique, just like the other wines, among the most appreciated wines of the evening for its balance and character. The Sagrantino has then been appreciated in small brandy glasses in the expression of Romanelli's grappa.
