Arnaldo Caprai: Sagrantino di Montefalco and the Great Wines of Umbria
Perugia, Italy
Friday, January 29th, 2010
DiWineTaste events for 2010 start with one of the maximum expressions of wine making in Umbria and in Italy: Arnaldo Caprai. The prestigious winery from Montefalco is in fact the main protagonist of the renaissance of Sagrantino grape - the magnificent autochthonous red variety of Umbria - bringing its wines to the highest top of worldwide enology. To the evening took part, representing the guest winery, Marco Caprai, owner of the firm, and Alessandro Mazzoni, commercial manager. To the event also took part Prof. Leonardo Valenti of the University of Milan, Department of Vegetal Production, one of the best experts of viticulture in Italy, important figure for the revaluation of many Italian autochthonous varieties, as well as fundamental protagonist, with Marco Caprai's winery, of the researches and studies which brought to the revaluation of Sagrantino grape and its remarkable potentialities. It is in fact thanks to the passion and work of Marco Caprai and Prof. Leonardo Valenti today Sagrantino reached such prestigious levels all over the world: their researches have literally changed - forever - Umbrian enology and of Montefalco, making Sagrantino a giant of worldwide enology. Five wines have been presented in this event, all being expression of Umbrian and Montefalco's viticulture. The event in fact started with Grechetto dei Colli Martani Grecante 2008, the famous white berried grape of Italy's green heart, followed by the first red wine, Montefalco Rosso 2006 - produced with Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot grapes - also presented in "reserve" style vintage 2005, aged for a longer time in barrique than the previous wine. Fourth wine of the event - and indisputable protagonist of the evening - flagship and emblem wine of Arnaldo Caprai winery: Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni 2005, awarded, in this vintage, with DiWineTaste's five diamonds. It is thanks to this wine Marco Caprai has received the highest honors and praises in the world, a wine which - before any other else - allowed Sagrantino to be known worldwide. The event has then ended with Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito 2006, a wine, also in this case, of prestige and elegance. The wines have been presented in enogastronomical matching with dishes expressly created for each wine by Antonello Biancalana and made by Locanda dei Golosi's kitchen, led by chef Emiliano Buccolini.
