Tenute Silvio Nardi: Brunello di Montalcino and Sant'Antimo
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, January 27th, 2011
Among the most significant wineries of Montalcino, Tenute Silvio Nardi boasts a long history in this territory, and was among the founders - in 1967 - of the consortium of Brunello di Montalcino. An evening dedicated to the highest expression of Tuscan enology and having as protagonists all the wine styles traditionally produced in the Montalcino territory. To the evening took part dr. Fabrizio Lazzeri - agronomist of Tenute Silvio Nardi - and dr. Michela Fiorucci, public relations manager. The event had as protagonists all the typical wine styles of Montalcino, from "Rosso" to Brunello, therefore ending with Moscadello, as well as a wine representing San'Antimo area. Six wines have been poured in the glasses, including the prestigious Vigneto Manachiara and the rare Poggio Doria, an excellent Brunello di Montalcino not for sale, presented by Tenute Silvio Nardi in special occasions only. Dr. Lazzeri illustrated to participants the ampelographic and environmental differences among the estate's vineyards, in particular the different Sangiovese varieties and the wine making techniques used for production. The common subject of the evening was in fact Sangiovese - the queen grape of Montalcino - beginning from Rosso di Montalcino 2008, a grape in part found in the second wine of the evening as well, Sant'Antimo Rosso Tùran, together with Petit Verdot, Syrah and Colorino. The evening continued with Brunello di Montalcino 2005, fruit of the grapes from all the estate's vineyards, therefore to Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara 2005 - among the most significant and renowned expressions of Montalcino - made from the grapes harvested in the homonymous vineyard located in the South-East area of the denomination's territory. An interesting comparison has been done with the excellent Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Doria 2004 - a wine not for sale and produced in the best vintages only, like Manachiara - from the homonymous vineyard located at Casale del Bosco, in the North-West area of the denomination's territory. The evening ended with Moscadello di Montalcino 2007, one of the most ancient wines of this territory, produced with Muscat Blanc grapes from late harvesting. The sensorial tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana, who also created the dishes paired to Tenute Silvio Nardi wines.
